Hooking Your Reader, five things to consider

Let's talk about hooking :-). Don't you want to grab your reader in the first line as they sort through novels at the book store? Can you start with a line so enticing that they have to see if the rest is like the first line in the book? I'm aiming for that goal.
1. Go straight to the action or a crucial scene that will move the story into a page turner.
EX: "I screamed bloody murder when I saw that a car was heading into the lobby of my downtown office." This is better than starting with her coming down the stairs to a car that has already come through the glass entrance.

2. Don't use too much flowery language or words that have to be researched to get the point.
EX:  Paul West's words, "a certain amount of sass to speak up for prose that's rich, succulent and full of novelty."
What would be your first thought when you opened up a book and saw this as the opening line? Me? I'd put it down and go for something else.
3. Some words are attention grabbing yet can completely throw the reader for a loop.
EX: "His mother@*% girlfriend *itch slapped me across my f^&))( mouth."
Yes, I was kind and yes, I have seen things like this. I was okay with it as the book was from someone that I knew wrote in that manner so I wasn't as offended as I would have been from someone else. I'm great with people using some words, if the scene calls for it, but just make sure of how you handle this kind of opening.
4. Jokes can be a great opener, depending on the humor used and if it's relevant to the story line.
EX: "So we're friends now, when do the benefits kick in?" This would be great for a romantic comedy but not if you're doing a regency or an inspirational.
5. Go for a power play and use strong words.
EX: "The ground shook under my feet and I fought not to fall down the flight of brick steps as the out of control car went barreling through the glass of the front lobby." Sounds better than: I was on the third step when a sedan came through the glass walls of the lobby and had me grabbing the rail for support.

I hope this helps.

Second Week Snippets - To Have and Too Bold

A Snippet From my published paranormal romance
To Have and Too Bold:
****************************************

“Am I to understand that our engagement party is tomorrow?”

“Is that what has you so upset?”
“Is it?” I repeated sternly.
“Yes. Wait, tell me you knew.”
I shook my head.
“Shit. What did your father tell you?”
“He gave the impression that I had a couple of weeks to get used to the idea.”
Allastair lowered his forehead until it hit the post with a soft thunk. Then he sighed.
“Some of this makes sense now.”
He set himself on the opposite end of the mattress. “I was under the impression that you were involved in all of this or had been told and was considering yourself on strike. Now I see that you were clueless of the plan’s details.”
“Okay, so he lied to you as well?”
“Obviously so.”
“How can we base a marriage on lies and false mirrors?”
“I don’t know, but we have to do the best we can.”
“You still mean to go through with this? Why?”

“I’ve already explained that we have to bond the past of our clans.”
“No, damn it. What do you get out of this?”
“I honestly want peace.”
“I don’t believe that you’re so honorable that you are forgoing any wishes you had for the future in order to go about claiming world peace. Tell me another reason.”
“Why can’t you let it go?” He asked with a tone riding frustration.
“This is my life and you want me to just let it go? And this is why I have so much of a problem getting my head wrapped around this. You don’t know me so how the hell do you think that you can ask me to become a robot for your own pleasure? I’m so fed up with this ridiculous arrangement that I feel like the minute I fall prey to this that I will lose everything that is myself.”
“Yes, you are essentially a sacrifice. We both are. Can you live with that?”
“Ugh! Tell me something selfish that you get out of this, you overbearing asshole. For the love of Rah, what the hell do you want for your own improper needs because I know something is behind all of this?”
“Fine. You sure that you want to force this subject?”
He was suddenly in my face, a bare inch from my nose. His scent rushed around me as it swirled with my anger.
I nodded as I breathed deeply. I caught another scent as he came toward me, lust.
His lips were on mine and I was banged against the wood of my bed. I heard a low growl and the pillow was wrenched away from me. I barely heard it hit the floor before his weight was on me as his mouth bruised mine.
“This is something that I’ve wanted for years and I aim to have it.”
I went to protest and his lips sealed against mine so no sound could come from them. I felt his tongue tentatively trace my bottom lips. The air changed and he was kissing me as if it was the very first kiss he’d ever experienced. I knew that to be false but it evoked feelings in me of stolen moments and tender embraces. At least, what I imagined them to be. I may be a bookworm but I was a romantic at heart. I wanted all the trappings of a passionate love affair, one to last for eternity. Instead, I had a devilishly handsome man who had no other immediate plan than to make me his sacrificial lamb to our broken society.
Then he said something that stopped all coherent thoughts or imprisoned anger.
“Calinda, please kiss me.”

With those words I was lost. I complied.

A "running diary” of a writing process - What to write next?

Some of you guys know that I just finished the rewrites on my first gothic manuscript. If you didn't know this then where the heck have you been? Now I have to figure out what to do next. I have about 60 ideas saved in a file and some of them even have rough outlines for what each is about but what do I do next?
I have a 6-8 book paranormal series that I could go back to since I'm only 1/4 into writing the second book but I'm not seeing it selling anytime soon. I've tried to get it out there but it doesn't seem to be what the market is looking for right now. It's my favorite of everything that I have written so far but that doesn't mean that it's going to be easily taken in.

There's a more vintage shifter manuscript that I started but I'd have to get my mind back into that frame to execute it properly. After doing my gothic, my heart is only half into finishing that project, to matter how good I have the story line penciled out.

Maybe I can do several beat sheets on the ideas I have and see which one screams the loudest to be written but that also means that I have to actually get those sheets down pat before I can say that I did my best to pick the story that I need to focus on next.

What seems to be selling right now is New Adult, Historicals, and Contemporary romance...and I'm not into writing those. I'm more witches, vampires, shifters, demons, and such in an Urban or Southern based place.
I'd love to toss ideas out to you guys to see what you would like for me to write but then some lazy person would grab my ideas before I was able to flesh it out for myself. That sucks. So I'm guessing that my only option is to start reading over all of my ideas and find one that has me jumping into my plotting shoes for my next big project.

Any other suggestions? Ideas? Share them with me.

Which five female lead characters from novels would I have dinner with?

If I could have dinner with five "killer" women of fictional proportion, I'd happily take these ladies:

5. Mercy Thompson
She is half Indian and a skin walker as her father's heritage gave her the ability to became a coyote at will. Her main squeeze is an alpha werewolf named Adam who loves her enough to keep pulling her tail out of unfortunate accidents. Cough Cough. Her best friends are werewolves, a metal goblin, and a sullen vampire as she deals with a pack that isn't happy taking her in, a vampire kiss that has a grudge against her, and her constantly stepping on the toes of the fae community.

***

4. Rachel Morgan

She's a witchy witch with a streak for catching the bad guy as a supernatural runner (bounty hunter) and police consultant. Even though she fought to be a white earth witch, her DNA takes her well out of her land of comfort and into the underworld that stains her kind soul. She lives with a sexy vamp named Ivy and a pixie named Jenks who also are her partners in their partnership of their company Vampiric Charms. And did I mention the demons? Have ley line, will travel.

***

3. Riley Jenson
Image result for riley jenson guardian series
This woman is a half shape shifting werewolf and half vampire who also has a twin brother named Rhoan. They both work for a paranormal division that protects and serves, but in more than one form. Her life is on the line in her day job but it's her sex life that is more dangerous as she is the source of power that a certain few are killing to get. When you add a sexy vamp named Quin and a few yummy men that are lined up for her full moon cravings, steam rises from the blood edged pages.

***

2. Cat Crawfield
This farm bred lady is also a half breed because her vamp daddy left mommy with a few surprises that no one was expecting. The hate that she grew up being fed from her bitter mom left her to hunt what was part of her blood lines, vampires. Then she comes across the target that bites back, Bones, with his sleek style and sexy British accent. He begins schooling her in more than one way as they realize they aren't just the killers but being hunted as well but heir love keeps them going.

***

1. Anita Blake
No surprise here, if you pay attention to my FB and blogs. If I could ever turn into a bad ass heroine from the fictional shelves then this would be who I aimed for. She's a necromancer, Preternatural Marshal,l but also the human love of the Master of the City of St. Louis, Jean Claude. Sadly, she finds out that not only is able to call the dead but she carries more than one strain of lycanthropy. Being all of this is tough but throw in a vengeful vampire council plus growing unearthly power and this lover of many is over the top delicious.

***

I guess that I have a "type". These are mostly "take charge" women who dare to live and love the way they want to. It doesn't hurt that they happen to be curvy, sexy, and sassy. Wink.

What about you, who would you choose?

If someone gave you a free plane ticket to anywhere in the world, where would you go?

If someone gave you a free plane ticket to anywhere in the world, where would you go?

For me, it would depend on what time of year it is and whether I needed a passport or not. I've always wanted to go to Hawaii but it's a bit more pricey than I could afford, as if I could really afford any of these trips in the first place.

Off the top of my head (at this very moment) I'd have to say the Virgin Islands. My hubby jokes that I'm not allowed there anymore as I'm no longer a virgin but I say that's rubbish. :-)

Inside of the Virgin Islands Political regions of the Virgin Islands
I'd hope to have a week to look over the islands as there are plenty of things to visit while there. My top three of the islands would be St. Croix, St. John, and St. Thomas. These have been on my Travel To Do List since I was a gawky preteen.

Saint Croix
St. Croix is the largest of the islands in the territory, being 28 by 7 miles
Here, I'd like to see: Buck Island with its coral reef ecosystem and do a RV tour of the island

Saint Thomas
The district has a land area of 31.24 square miles
Here, I'd like to see: the Butterfly Garden,  Coral World Ocean Park, the Mountain Top Trail, Blackbeard's Castle and Bluebeard's Castle

Saint John
It is 19.61 sq mi in area with a population of 4,170
Here, I'd like to see: the Botanical Gardens and the numerous beautiful beaches-including some of the saltwater pools that you can hike to, maybe I'd even look over the old plantation ruins

Where would you go?

Second Week Snippets - Sexy and from Andromeda, my SCP Best Seller

Bestsellers

This is from Andromeda, my Secret Cravings Best Seller for Vampire Romantic Suspense

This scene has the girls (Andromeda and her BF Danya) going over custom apparel when it gets interrupted by Andromeda's yummy brother, Perseus. Embarrassing and Naughty. Wink.

When I walked in, Danya was already set up for the night and admired my outfit.
“Nice dress! Can you make me one in a copper shade?”
“I can probably order the copper but I do have a deep russet color ready now, if you’re interested in that?”
“All I need to know is two things. One, would it look good with my coloring? And two, would I look weird in that style?”
“How about I let you try it on and see what you think. Then I can see if there are any changes I need to make while you have it on. I think the russet would be great with your hair and skin tone. I ordered it on a whim two months ago and it has been sitting around collecting dust ever since.”
“Okay, but let’s make it quick.”
The restrooms were being cleaned, so I suggested Perseus’ office to try the thing on.
“If you’re sure he’s not here, then okay,” she said as we walked into his quiet office.
I stripped off the dress and waited for her to get out of her leggings and tunic blouse. She was in a smoky gray satin strapless bra with matching thong panties. There was a two-inch scar across her left side, right under her strapless bra.
She saw me noticing it and just shrugged before saying, “Some monsters live only to hurt others, but I at least survived to see him die.”
“Did an old love do this to you?” I handed the dress over to her and felt her pain in the brief touch of her hand.
“Yes. He tried to stab me in the back. Literally. I moved at the last second and it kept him from slicing into my spine. He was high on meth and thought I'd hidden his stash from him. Apparently, he needed it bad enough to kill me.”
She pulled the velvet into place and it looked great, even with it being a few inches too short for her. The waistline emphasized her hips and the straps brought attention to her square shoulders. I knew exactly how to alter it to be more flattering and we were discussing the details as I felt Perseus come into the bar. She had taken off the dress and was handing it to me when the door opened. He stepped in and his gaze took in Danya’s semi-nude body in front of him.
She dropped the dress when she saw him and time seemed to stop. I had no idea who was emitting what, but the air was ripe with raw need, embarrassment, shock, and awe. I didn’t move for fear that I'd break the spell. Perseus came to first and reached down to pick up my forgotten dress. I accepted it without a word as his eyes never left Danya’s body. I slipped it on and saw Danya turn scarlet as she grabbed her clothes as a shield before her body, but the damage had already been done. She would’ve been better off just to dress in silence or even make a joke of the situation, but she didn’t. I decided to make the joke for her.
“I get someone naked in your office and you decide to walk in? What kind of brother are you?”
“I guess you should’ve locked the door. Besides, if anyone gets naked in my office, then I have the right to enjoy it.”
He smiled and I felt Danya’s embarrassment grow. She had a gorgeous blush covering her skin. I enjoyed this moment, but only at the satisfaction I got from knowing he wanted her as much as she wanted him.
“Well, no harm no foul.”
I shrugged and winked at Danya when she finally looked at me. She wasn’t sure if I'd known he would walk in, but intended to ask me when we were along again. I nodded at her in answer and she frowned at me. I shrugged again and she broke the tension.
“Boss, do you mind turning around so I can get dressed?”
“Yes, I do. I’ve already seen most of that gorgeous body so why try to hide it now?”
“A gentleman would turn around,” she countered as she still held her clothes against her blushing body.
“I never claimed to be a gentleman.” He gave her a heated look.

Firsts - Writing a Gothic Romance

I'm currently doing the rewrites on my first Gothic Romance (with paranormal elements) and I'm a ball of nerves. Being someone who loves Dracula, the movie, the series, and the book, I have mixed this adorationg with my slightly sinister side of dark drama to see if I can accomplish a true gothic romance. Lord, what was I thinking?
I actually found a website that tells you things that you have to have to write a gothic novel. I hadn't even thought about it until a fellow gothic writer found one for herself. Yep, you can get almost anything on the internet. Here's what Virtual Salt had on their page
http://www.virtualsalt.com/gothic.htm:

Gothic elements include the following:

1. Setting in a castle. The action takes place in and around an old castle, sometimes seemingly abandoned, sometimes occupied. The castle often contains secret passages, trap doors, secret rooms, trick panels with hidden levers, dark or hidden staircases, and possibly ruined sections.

The castle may be near or connected to caves, which lend their own haunting flavor with their darkness, uneven floors, branchings, claustrophobia, and mystery. And in horror-gothic, caves are often seem home to terrifying creatures such as monsters, or deviant forms of humans: vampires, zombies, wolfmen.
The goal of the dark and mysterious setting is to create a sense of unease and foreboding, contributing toward the atmosphere element.
2. An atmosphere of mystery and suspense. The work is pervaded by a threatening feeling, a fear enhanced by the unknown. This atmosphere is sometimes advanced when characters see only a glimpse of something--was that a person rushing out the window or only the wind blowing a curtain? Is that creaking sound coming from someone's step on the squeaky floor, or only the normal sounds of the night? Often the plot itself is built around a mystery, such as unknown parentage, a disappearance, or some other inexplicable event. People disappear or show up dead inexplicably. Elements 3, 4, and 5 below contribute to this atmosphere.
In modern novels and filmmaking, the inexplicable events are often murders. The bodies are sometimes mutilated in ways that defy explanation--"What kind of monster could do this?" or "Here's the body, but there's no blood." When the corpses start to mount, suspense is raised as to who will get killed next. (In filmmaking, the atmosphere can be created largely by the music. Anyone who has watched a horror movie with the sound off or very low knows this.)
3. An ancient prophecy is connected with the castle or its inhabitants (either former or present). The prophecy is usually obscure, partial, or confusing. "What could it mean?" In more watered down modern examples, this may amount to merely a legend: "It's said that the ghost of old man Krebs still wanders these halls."
4. Omens, portents, visions. A character may have a disturbing dream vision, or some phenomenon may be seen as a portent of coming events. For example, if the statue of the lord of the manor falls over, it may portend his death. In modern fiction, a character might see something (a shadowy figure stabbing another shadowy figure) and think that it was a dream. This might be thought of as an "imitation vision." Sometimes an omen will be used for foreshadowing, while other writers will tweak the reader by denying expectation--what we thought was foreshadowinig wasn't.
5. Supernatural or otherwise inexplicable events. Dramatic, amazing events occur, such as ghosts or giants walking, or inanimate objects (such as a suit of armor or painting) coming to life. In some works, the events are ultimately given a natural explanation, while in others the events are truly supernatural.
6. High, even overwrought emotion. The narration may be highly sentimental, and the characters are often overcome by anger, sorrow, surprise, and especially, terror. Characters suffer from raw nerves and a feeling of impending doom. Crying and emotional speeches are frequent. Breathlessness and panic are common. In the filmed gothic, screaming is common.

7. Women in distress. As an appeal to the pathos and sympathy of the reader, the female characters often face events that leave them fainting, terrified, screaming, and/or sobbing. A lonely, pensive, and oppressed heroine is often the central figure of the novel, so her sufferings are even more pronounced and the focus of attention. The women suffer all the more because they are often abandoned, left alone (either on purpose or by accident), and have no protector at times. (In budget horror-gothic, when the guy tells the girl, "Stay here; I'll be right back," you pretty much know that one of them will soon be dead.)
8. Women threatened by a powerful, impulsive, tyrannical male. One or more male characters has the power, as king, lord of the manor, father, or guardian, to demand that one or more of the female characters do something intolerable. The woman may be commanded to marry someone she does not love (it may even be the powerful male himself), or commit a crime.
9. The metonymy of gloom and horror. Metonymy is a subtype of metaphor, in which something (like rain) is used to stand for something else (like sorrow). For example, the film industry likes to use metonymy as a quick shorthand, so we often notice that it is raining in funeral scenes. Note that the following metonymies for "doom and gloom" all suggest some element of mystery, danger, or the supernatural.

wind, especially howlingrain, especially blowing
doors grating on rusty hingessighs, moans, howls, eerie sounds
footsteps approachingclanking chains
lights in abandoned roomsgusts of wind blowing out lights
characters trapped in a roomdoors suddenly slamming shut
ruins of buildingsbaying of distant dogs (or wolves?)
thunder and lightningcrazed laughter

10. The vocabulary of the gothic. The constant use of the appropriate vocabulary set creates the atmosphere of the gothic. Using the right words maintains the dark-and-stimulated feel that defines the gothic. Here as an example are some of the words (in several categories) that help make up the vocabulary of the gothic in The Castle of Otranto

Mystery
diabolical, enchantment, ghost, goblins, haunted, infernal, magic, magician, miracle, necromancer, omens, ominous, portent, preternatural, prodigy, prophecy, secret, sorcerer, spectre, spirits, strangeness, talisman, vision
