Bests of the Year

I decided to pull a topic from a radio station that I listen to and every year they make a list of the five top things that were the best to them for the year. Sometimes they choose alcohol, vacation spots, hotels, restaurants, dive bars, menu items, and boutiques. You can argue any of these that you choose but it's still my blog and my picks. :-) Giggle. If your choices beat mine, I'm great with changing my opinion.

Baked French Toast Casserole with Maple Syruphttp://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/paula-deen/baked-french-toast-casserole-with-maple-syrup-recipe2.html
ngredients
1 loaf French bread (13 to 16 ounces)
8 large eggs
2 cups half-and-half
1 cup milk
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Dash salt
Praline Topping, recipe follows
Maple syrup
Praline Topping:
1/2 pound (2 sticks) butter
1 cup packed light brown sugar
1 cup chopped pecans
2 tablespoons light corn syrup
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Directions
Slice French bread into 20 slices, 1-inch each. (Use any extra bread for garlic toast or bread crumbs). Arrange slices in a generously buttered 9 by 13-inch flat baking dish in 2 rows, overlapping the slices. In a large bowl, combine the eggs, half-and-half, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt and beat with a rotary beater or whisk until blended but not too bubbly. Pour mixture over the bread slices, making sure all are covered evenly with the milk-egg mixture. Spoon some of the mixture in between the slices. Cover with foil and refrigerate overnight.

The next day, preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Spread Praline Topping evenly over the bread and bake for 40 minutes, until puffed and lightly golden. Serve with maple syrup.

Praline Topping:
Combine all ingredients in a medium bowl and blend well. Makes enough for Baked French Toast Casserole.

My Twist on Two Christmas Carols

SHOPPING BLOWS
Oh the checkout line is frightful but the sales are so delightful
And since we've got funds so low
Shopping Blows, shopping blows, shopping blows

The idiots show no sign of stopping and my patience is dropping
The fights have turned into rows
Shopping Blows, shopping blows, shopping blows

When we finally say All Right, how I hate going through this swarm
I'll hold down my tongue so tight so the curse words won't form

The night is slowly dying and my dear we're still here dying
But as long as you save some dough
Shopping Blows, shopping blows, shopping blows.

Random Writing Tips from Authors

As I've gone online for writing tips and tools, I've seen a list of things that have grabbed my attention. See if you like any of these.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Start telling the stories that only you can tell, because there’ll always be better writers than you and there’ll always be smarter writers than you. There will always be people who are much better at doing this or doing that — but you are the only you.― Neil Gaiman
"My first rule was given to me by TH White, author of The Sword in the Stone and other Arthurian fantasies and was: Read. Read everything you can lay hands on. I always advise people who want to write a fantasy or science fiction or romance to stop reading everything in those genres and start reading everything else from Bunyan to Byatt." —Michael Moorcock
I would advise anyone who aspires to a writing career that before developing his talent he would be wise to develop a thick hide. — Harper Lee
Believe that you’re a writer.
James Patterson
The first draft of everything is shit. -Ernest Hemingway
Never rescue your hero.
Break out of your comfort zone.
You can’t wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club. ― Jack London
"Always carry a note-book. And I mean always. The short-term memory only retains information for three minutes; unless it is committed to paper you can lose an idea for ever." — Will Self
Mark Twain
There are three rules for writing a novel. Unfortunately, no one knows what they are. ― W. Somerset Maugham
Did any of this help, or at least make
you laugh??
Second Week Snippets - My newest venture
This is an unedited snippet from my WIP (work in progress). It's a new venture for me but I'm willing to see where this will take me. I'd like to hear what you think.
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was a brisk night that blew the rusty leaves into my hair and a chill to my fingertips. Of course my thin trench coat wasn't substantial enough to withstand anything under forty degrees, so I shivered in my worn denim jeans and long sleeve blouse. But I needed a moment of courage to step up to the imposing steel front door with enormous lion knocker that was at eye level for the average adult. Average, that was me in a nutshell, except for the visions that I got. Those were enough to have ruined my chances of already being married as my last doozy had been when a gentleman caller was attempting to kiss me goodnight. I had resulted in screaming at my internal screenplay as his cool lips had brushed across mine, then I had fainted. Thank God he had revived me before he’d run for the hills. I was still beating my head against the wall on that particularly embarrassing moment in my loveless life. It had gotten frequent enough on my visions that sex hadn't been tried in over three years. I was even afraid to head into a sex toy shop as I might have an episode in the swing aisle.
I said a silent prayer as I reached a shaky hand to the cold steel knocker. The door began to creek with wind and age as the first pound toned throughout the wind filled doorway. I had stepped back just as the door shook with the effort of someone pulling it open. My heart leapt into my whimpering throat as the door creaked open a sliver. I paused for a still second and saw that no one was in the breath of drafty space that was being sucked into the gloomy interior of the back-lit foyer.
“Um, hel-lo?” I stuttered the question, waiting for someone to pop up in my presence.
No reply came back. No scuttle of feet was heard to prove that someone had actually opened the ancient door. I felt a stiff breeze push me into the open alcove, almost toppling me onto the white marble floor that met the floor before me.

Well???????

Firsts That I want for 2015 - Part 1

I spent a good bit of time thinking over what I wanted to put for this month's First blog but had a hard time finding something that "hit the spot" for me. This time I decided to make up a list of Firsts that I want to complete throughout the next year. There are several, so I'll do three for now and do three more, plus any of the first few that I didn't complete, in three . I'll post the other parts the first weeks of March, June, September, and let you know about the rest around the end of the year holidays in 2015.

1. Write my First Gothic Paranormal (aka another type of Romantic Suspense)

          I've already started it but being on the second chapter means that I barely have my act together. I'm surprised that I even came up with the GMC (goal, motivation, conflict) last week - on Thanksgiving Day, no less. It's a new venture for me and I want to see if I can do it justice. If not, then it was a wonderful learning experience. Either way, I want the first draft (when you toss the whole idea out of your mind and need to rework it, a few times) done by the end of April. I think that this is a fair goal with me being out of college.

2.  Have my First Home Office functional and in use

          The house that we bought in September has a good bit of work to be done on it. As we don't have adequate storage space, my office and the spare room have been  housing all of the items that we're going through for Goodwill donations. I was lucky enough to paint the walls before moving my desk, sewing machine, and bookcases in. It still needs the drawings on the wall, the black decorations, and everything ready to be used. MWAHAHAHA.

3.  Make my First Batch of Cinnamon Rolls

          Cinnamon rolls are one of my favs, even if lethal for anyone trying to fit into those skinny jeans. ;-) Maybe that's just me. Giggle. Even if I can't afford the caloric intake of having them on a frequent basis, I want to successfully make a batch of these babies. I'm sure that my best friend, and amazing cook, can help me accomplish this.

Who wants to do this with me? And yes, that means sharing it with me. I'll keep you posted and I'd love the same from you.
