Lying Through Her Fangs - Scene Fourteen

Lying Through Her Fangs

SCENE FOURTEEN
Hael’s P.O.V.

No words were said as she disrobed and put on her first selection. I pushed thoughts of her being naked just feet away from me and focused on not getting an obvious erection from my vivid imagination.
“Here’s number one,” she opened the door and took small steps to the gilded mirror behind my chair.
She was in an off white dress of thick lace that flared at her hips and feet but hugged her in every place in between. The expanse above her breasts was see through and her arms were bare. A glint of a thin gold belt encased her tiny looking waist.
“Lovely, but I’m seeing something a bit more grand for you,” stated Fran.
Xylia sternly looked over her figure in the glass but wasn’t impressed.
“I agree with you. It’s a beautiful dress but dancing would be at a minimum.”
“It’s a virgin Morticia dress and hugs you well,” I added.
Xylia laughed, “And that sums it up nicely.”
She swiveled back to the dressing room.
“I’ll need a zipper help on this one,” she said shortly afterwards.
Fran walked past me as she waited on the other side of the door. There was a pool at her feet of a dusty pale pink with blurs of black. Once she came from around the door, I could see they were flowers that trailed up and down from neck to floor. Strategically placed lace gave the illusion that she was barely covered but I knew better.
“An improvement,” was all Fran said.
Xylia turned in the mirror, showing that her back was exposed to below breast level. I could see myself licking up her spine.
“Very Rita Hayworth,” Fran interjected.
“It’s certainly a maybe,” Xylia added before going back to the other selections.
There was a heavy rustling sound and the door opened for Fran to zip her up again.
She drug the train and the lights danced off the steel gray sequins that covered her from padded shoulders to a deep cut front before it dropped to the carpet.
“An inch more and my navel would be visible through the gray mesh.”
“Nothing wrong with that,” I replied to Xylia with a grin.
“Too heavy,” Fran countered.
With a sigh, Xylia was back to the room again.
“Two left before we regroup,” Fran responded to the sigh.
Another moment and she could be heard before the door clicked open, “Is this too much like a romantic wedding dress?”
“It’s a combination of that and a negligee,” Fran added with a nod.
The front was soft and draped around her but then she turned and her back was bare to the waistline before the fabric curved over her butt.
“Wow,” was all I could say. Maybe I needed to be a back man instead of a leg man.
“One spilled glass of wine and I’d look like Carrie,” Xylia giggled.
Fran laughed back, waving her hand. “Why would you even joke like that?”
“So goes my life, and my luck has slipped into the darkness with it,” Xylia retorted as she took a minute to get the whole view of the glamorous dress.
“If you’ve run into Hael then your luck can’t be that bad, right?”
Fran winked at me and then met Xylia’s gaze in the mirror. Xylia looked at me then the floor. “One more.”
“The blue. I have a feeling it will be the one.”
Xylia shrugged and I half way hoped it would slip from her shoulders.
I ran that wish out of my mind and focused on my shoes.
“Um, yeah,” was all I heard from Xylia.
“Oh yes, the buttons,” Fran said before moving to the door that was slowly opening. “I believe I was on the mark with this choice.” Fran sounded satisfied.
Then Xylia walked around the wood door and my jaw hit the ground with a thump before I prayed my arousal wasn’t obvious. I clasped my hands in my lap and shifted, not leaving the chair. Then she walked toward the mirror and I could see her legs through the sheer navy blue fabric. I slid my gaze up to her hip before her body was covered in lace again. It was a freaking peep show of lean, curving muscle. Nope, I was a leg man. No doubts there.

Then I was shaken by Fran’s voice. “Yes, it’s the one.” I looked her way and she smiled at the heat in my eyes. Nodding, she went to where Xylia stood and she started talking nonsense about shoes. Good lord, I was going to die from that woman in that dress.

Can you describe parts of your life in five words or less?

I saw this idea on a blog from last year and have been wondering if I could actually do this justice. Well, here's my try at it.

In Five Words Or Less....

My day job - Crazy. I was crazy once.

My pets - Didn't you just go out?

My writing career - Why won't they publish me?

My thoughts on college - I made more before attending.

My body - Curves with intermittent weight fluctuations.

My mind - Wait, I have one? Dude!

My marriage - He loves me with flaws.

My sewing hobby - Where is my seam ripper?

My former dancing life - Evolved from tap to naughty

My car - She needs how much work?

My train of thought - Wait, I have one? Righteous!

Favorite color - Dark green is soul deep.

Favorite movie - The Wedding Date, my Yoda. (You'd get this is you've watched it)

My best friends - They know the real me.

My ex-boyfriends - Exes for very good reasons.

My hair - my best feature, mouth included

My skin - Was Morticia Adams my mom?

My villain crush - Can I keep you, Loki?

My point - Wait, I have one? Seriously?

Writing Tips pulled from library books

Here are some of the tips I got from "The Book of Writing-The Ultimate Guide to Writing Well" by Paula LaRocque.

AVOID VAGUE QUALIFIERS

Try writing without using: Very, extremely, totally, completely, wholly, entirely, utterly, really, quite, rather, somewhat, slightly, fairly. - If you do then take them out because they are used to weaken a statement and no one wants that.

PRUNE PREPOSITIONS

Prepositions are vital but most be limited and controlled or they'll fill the sentence with chaff, disrupt flow, and force its rhythms into an annoying singsong.

QUICK, GET A CAMERA

Writers should be able to describe a person/thing/place as if it's been captured on film. Work on your strong adjectives to get your images to pop into the mind of the reader instead of a flat detailing that will be forgotten in mere moments.

WRITE FAST, EDIT SLOW

Write Fast - If a scene needs research then try to do it before you sit down to type the scene out. Reduce your scene down to the main goal and then expand from there. Do you have the beginning/middle/end to each scene, even if in your head? Did you make any outlines?

Edit Slow - Artists can be so passionate that they bore you to tears on a specific scene that doesn't move you as well as the artist themselves. After catching the picture from above, got back over it slowly so you can whittle it down to the pinpoint of what you need to show your reader. If it doesn't "move you" then it may not "move them".

For me, I need to work on prepositions and more outlines. What about you?

Second Week Snippets - My Work In Progress

This is from the manuscript I started this spring so the piece is still rough and unfinished, but I wanted to share some of the funny scenes that have come from my lovely imagination. Enjoy!

**********
Parking the old luxury sedan into the multi car garage behind the mansion, she reached for her purchases just as the car door slammed against her butt as she was flung face first into the passenger seat and the recyclable bags that had her morning items in them.
A muffled cackle was heard behind her as she pulled herself up to a standing position beside the metal that had assaulted her.
“Benjamin dear, why do you have such an uncouth assistant? She seems utterly helpless,” was asked by the newest fling, Caroline.
She looked at both of them before seeing her boss’ eyes flicker down and then up again, suppressing what looked to be a growing grin. Her skirt was askew and hiked up enough to show the rose colored birthmark she had on her left thigh. Yanking it back into place, Della prayed that her ample backside had been better covered when they had come outside to see it in the air.
“Caroline, let’s leave my assistant alone and let her do what she’s paid to do. You would never want my life to come crashing around me by offending her. Am I correct?” His deep voice asked the whiny waif grasping her offered elbow.
Another tortured laugh came out of her and she patted his hand and looked down her nose at Della before mentally dismissing her.

Della plastered on the smile that had gotten her the job and was as fake as the nose on the woman beside her. “I have your items, Mr. Rumfield and will have your calendar set up for you before you come home this afternoon.”
He nodded his approval before she forced herself to calmly stroll into the mansion as if she hadn’t been flamed faced at her display of typical clumsiness. Some days she wondered how she made it out of bed without being taken to the hospital for a month in traction.

Well? Thoughts, suggestions, giggles?

Putting it out there - Nervous Breakdown Included

As an author, I have had three of my manuscripts published. Each of these was wondrous as it was solid proof to me that I had enough talent to have a publishing house back my creative fictional plots. Every contract was putting a stake in the ground of my faith in myself to get my characters out there to people who are interested in them.

I'm behind on my writing as I have just recently gotten back to writing again since I'm no longer working two jobs and going to college. I started four books and had book one of my series out there for people to critique for me. Being able to grab my Facebook friends up so I can get second opinions on my ideas was a great tool to have with my not having a critique group to back me. These people have been successful sounding boards on what will sound more realistic for a my projects.

Getting their advice is helpful, even in the moments that my work sucks, but there is one thing that tears at me worse than being vulnerable to my friends. This would be the dreaded cold submission to a publishing company or a well known agent. It makes me want to hurl just thinking about being inferior to the people that rock the publishing world. Having to conquer this horrendous feat is currently what I'm doing and I find it hard to not count the days.

For those of you that are well into several publications, indie or not, I'd like to know how you keep yourself from checking your inbox every few minutes as you chew your nails to the bone. Currently, I have two manuscripts at various places and know that a few of them will take much longer as those companies are more in demand. I totally understand why some place need three months, but that doesn't mean that I'll have my scalp intact by then.

All of the dates for each place has been etched into my desk calendar as I hope to hear something positive back from each of them. Yes, I know that won't happen, but I can dream. How do I calm the sea of ships that are battering around my nervous stomach as I think over these knowledgeable people tossing my submission against a cubicle wall? Where does one focus when this deadline of your own making looms over your head? Do I just focus (lol) on the next projects as a way to absorb some of the dread? I'm trying to. I even took on critiquing someone else as a way to keep my mind away from my own submissions but I have a long way to go before I can actually calm down.

The nerves will die when I get a response from each of these places, or I go ahead with the lobotomy that has been mentioned to me since childhood. I know that I can't control this once I hit the Send button. It's a chant in my head every single day. The one thing I can be happy about is that I did it. My babies were sent to people to tell me if I "dressed them funny" or if they needed to be on a fictional diet (backstory), but I'm trusting the people with my children. This mama is proud of every single one of the babies I'm able to have and wish them the best when I send them on to "college" (publishers). But a mom is always a mom and I'm scared for them. Any suggestions? Funny lines? Lobotomy references?

Things that my grandmother taught me

My grandmother, Ida Merle, was an emergency room nurse at a hospital in Columbus, Ga. She had flaming red hair that curled of it's own accord and a stubborn streak that matched it. She was amazing and had a gentle kindness that was always there for us. She would make us big old southern meals, even if it was the smell and sizzle of sausage at 6 am on a Saturday morning during summer. She was one of my heroes but some of it didn't come until several years after she had passed away.

Grandma was determined to raise flowers around her property and most of them are my personal favorites, like Tiger Lilies (which I have one tattooed on my upper back). She could raise hydrangeas of all colors and would be stern with them if a certain one wasn't the color she was trying for. How dare they be purple instead of the pink that she wanted. Gotta love it.

She told me horror stories of the real life emergencies that came through the emergency room in order to show me what can happen to a young girl who didn't take care of herself. This was on a range from a couple that was hit by a car while they were necking in a parking lot to the diseases that caused immense pain to the ladies who were unfortunate with their partners. I was a preteen when the stories were repeated and she just wanted to make sure that I always thought things out before I reacted in a physical way, let alone emotional. Of course, being that young, I didn't absorb it all until much later, when the body already had some of the scars of hard lessons learned.

She taught me that disrespect came in many forms, back talking, a negative connotation, or a dirty look that wasn't "christian-like". The woman once beaned me with a silver soup ladle for back talking to her that I didn't feel like coming in for dinner. My ears rang louder than church bells that day and I made sure to apologize before I was allowed one bite of the amazing meal that was placed in front of me.

Later on, I found out that she had been a victim of abuse and it dug deep as I'm a victim as well. She didn't have to be with someone that hurt her so many years ago but her beliefs were made of more classical training in her specific circumstance. From her strong will, I was taught that no one had to take that, no matter how many times love was professed. Love is reported to hurt but in these cases, it never should.

Ida Merle was a rock in my life of waterfalls. She still is as I take her advice into consideration when faced with imposing possibilities. She kept me from sleeping around as a teenager and young adult, that love does not always equal pain, and that you could root happiness anywhere in your life as long as you kept it watered.

I miss you Ida Merle (Grandma) and I appreciate everything that you did for me, then and now.

If someone gave you a free plane ticket to anywhere in the world, where would you go?

If someone gave you a free plane ticket to anywhere in the world, where would you go?

For me, it would depend on what time of year it is and whether I needed a passport or not. I've always wanted to go to Hawaii but it's a bit more pricey than I could afford, as if I could really afford any of these trips in the first place.

Off the top of my head (at this very moment) I'd have to say the Virgin Islands. My hubby jokes that I'm not allowed there anymore as I'm no longer a virgin but I say that's rubbish. :-)

Inside of the Virgin Islands Political regions of the Virgin Islands
I'd hope to have a week to look over the islands as there are plenty of things to visit while there. My top three of the islands would be St. Croix, St. John, and St. Thomas. These have been on my Travel To Do List since I was a gawky preteen.

Saint Croix
St. Croix is the largest of the islands in the territory, being 28 by 7 miles
Here, I'd like to see: Buck Island with its coral reef ecosystem and do a RV tour of the island

Saint Thomas
The district has a land area of 31.24 square miles
Here, I'd like to see: the Butterfly Garden,  Coral World Ocean Park, the Mountain Top Trail, Blackbeard's Castle and Bluebeard's Castle

Saint John
It is 19.61 sq mi in area with a population of 4,170
Here, I'd like to see: the Botanical Gardens and the numerous beautiful beaches-including some of the saltwater pools that you can hike to, maybe I'd even look over the old plantation ruins

Where would you go?

Second Week Snippets - Sexy and from Andromeda, my SCP Best Seller

Bestsellers

This is from Andromeda, my Secret Cravings Best Seller for Vampire Romantic Suspense

This scene has the girls (Andromeda and her BF Danya) going over custom apparel when it gets interrupted by Andromeda's yummy brother, Perseus. Embarrassing and Naughty. Wink.

When I walked in, Danya was already set up for the night and admired my outfit.
“Nice dress! Can you make me one in a copper shade?”
“I can probably order the copper but I do have a deep russet color ready now, if you’re interested in that?”
“All I need to know is two things. One, would it look good with my coloring? And two, would I look weird in that style?”
“How about I let you try it on and see what you think. Then I can see if there are any changes I need to make while you have it on. I think the russet would be great with your hair and skin tone. I ordered it on a whim two months ago and it has been sitting around collecting dust ever since.”
“Okay, but let’s make it quick.”
The restrooms were being cleaned, so I suggested Perseus’ office to try the thing on.
“If you’re sure he’s not here, then okay,” she said as we walked into his quiet office.
I stripped off the dress and waited for her to get out of her leggings and tunic blouse. She was in a smoky gray satin strapless bra with matching thong panties. There was a two-inch scar across her left side, right under her strapless bra.
She saw me noticing it and just shrugged before saying, “Some monsters live only to hurt others, but I at least survived to see him die.”
“Did an old love do this to you?” I handed the dress over to her and felt her pain in the brief touch of her hand.
“Yes. He tried to stab me in the back. Literally. I moved at the last second and it kept him from slicing into my spine. He was high on meth and thought I'd hidden his stash from him. Apparently, he needed it bad enough to kill me.”
She pulled the velvet into place and it looked great, even with it being a few inches too short for her. The waistline emphasized her hips and the straps brought attention to her square shoulders. I knew exactly how to alter it to be more flattering and we were discussing the details as I felt Perseus come into the bar. She had taken off the dress and was handing it to me when the door opened. He stepped in and his gaze took in Danya’s semi-nude body in front of him.
She dropped the dress when she saw him and time seemed to stop. I had no idea who was emitting what, but the air was ripe with raw need, embarrassment, shock, and awe. I didn’t move for fear that I'd break the spell. Perseus came to first and reached down to pick up my forgotten dress. I accepted it without a word as his eyes never left Danya’s body. I slipped it on and saw Danya turn scarlet as she grabbed her clothes as a shield before her body, but the damage had already been done. She would’ve been better off just to dress in silence or even make a joke of the situation, but she didn’t. I decided to make the joke for her.
“I get someone naked in your office and you decide to walk in? What kind of brother are you?”
“I guess you should’ve locked the door. Besides, if anyone gets naked in my office, then I have the right to enjoy it.”
He smiled and I felt Danya’s embarrassment grow. She had a gorgeous blush covering her skin. I enjoyed this moment, but only at the satisfaction I got from knowing he wanted her as much as she wanted him.
“Well, no harm no foul.”
I shrugged and winked at Danya when she finally looked at me. She wasn’t sure if I'd known he would walk in, but intended to ask me when we were along again. I nodded at her in answer and she frowned at me. I shrugged again and she broke the tension.
“Boss, do you mind turning around so I can get dressed?”
“Yes, I do. I’ve already seen most of that gorgeous body so why try to hide it now?”
“A gentleman would turn around,” she countered as she still held her clothes against her blushing body.
“I never claimed to be a gentleman.” He gave her a heated look.

Writing Tip - Proofreading

I've been looking up writing tips and have found a wonderous load of them at Daily Writing Tips. I've picked some tidbits and wanted to share them, plus my take on them.

7 Proofreading Steps

By Mark Nichol

1. Use a Checklist
Create a list of important things to check for, such as problem areas like agreement of nouns and verbs and of pronouns and antecedents, and number style.
ME - I do this in my track changes at the beginning of every chapter or in a separate comment if I'm using Google Drive. It's always after I read through it the first time and see if I need to add something important, or question part of the content. That way I can look back and remember all of my thoughts on each single chapter when cutting down on my less needed material.
2. Fact-Check
Double-check facts, figures, and proper names. If information remains to be inserted at the last minute, highlight the omission prominently so that no one forgets to do so.
ME - I typically do this in the rough draft outline that I make up when the story first starts to form. I ask myself what items will I need to look up in order to tell the story properly.
3. Spell-Check
Before proofreading a printout, spell-check the electronic version to find misspellings, as well as errors you or a colleague make frequently, such as omitting a closing parenthesis or quotation mark.
ME - I'm one of those people that have the spell check on at all times when I'm writing. It just feels like less work if I do it while I'm purging the rough draft from my brain.
4. Read Aloud
Reading text during the proof stage improves your chances of noticing errors, especially missing (“a summary the report follows”) or repeated (“a summary of the the report follows”) words.
ME - This works for me if I have a scene that just doesn't seem to sound realistic. Sometimes it's a love scene or just an argument between the sexes that I want another person to give me feedback on as if they were listening in on it happening in front of them.
5. Focus on One Line at a Time
When proofing print documents, use another piece of paper or a ruler to cover the text following the line you are proofreading, shifting the paper down as you go along. This technique helps you keep your place and discourages you from reading too quickly and missing subtle errors.
ME - I always read in order and then leave myself notes on what to check further into the story, like "make sure you used this car color in the next three chapters". I lose myself if I go out of context with any story. It's just how my brain works.
6. Attend to Format
Proofreading isn’t just about reviewing the text. Make sure that the document design adheres to established specifications. Check page numbering, column alignment, relative fonts, sizes, and other features of standard elements such as headlines, subheadings, captions, and footnotes. Inspect each type of feature within categories, such as looking at every headline, then every caption, and so on.
ME - I do this and then do it several more times as each time I submit something that particular house wants it sent in a very specific way. I even name the file, after it's sent, under the name of the house so I can see what I've sent and to which house.

7. Proof Again
Once revisions have been made, proofread the document again with the same thoroughness, rather than simply spot-checking the changes. An insertion or deletion may have thrown off the line count, for example.
ME - Give it some time between read throughs or you may not catch something crucial to the story. I also ask my critique partner and beta readers to go back into it to see what we all may have missed. Better safe than sorry in my eyes.
Thank you: http://www.dailywritingtips.com/7-proofreading-steps/

I hope these were helpful.
